- Youtube: No need to reinvent the wheel, Ultra Street Fighter 4 has been out long enough that videos covering almost every topic imaginable are up.
Every character has basic/advanced tutorials.
Trying to go on to win a big usf4 ae tournament? Videos on advanced topics (plinking/option selects/tournament footage/etc) are widely available. As Daigo said in an interview when asked how new players could get better, copy what the pros are doing. - Throw Tech: The abilty to press throw (lp+lk) at the same time as your opponent to cancel their throw. Not throw teching effectively results in you getting throw looped and makes your wake ups that much weaker.
- Cross Ups: A cross up is an atk that is hard/impossible to determine the side it will hit on and thus used to hit opponents where they aren’t blocking. Being able to hit your opponent and open them up for combos effectively is one of the most important skills to have.
- Bread and Butter combos (BnB): This leads us to BnB combos or the most basic forms of combos. Usually consisting of a hitconfirm into special of some sort. These combos are simple, safe and effective. The only disadvantage to them is that their damage output is lower than FDAC/ultra/super combos. Learn them and be able to do 100% of the time.
- Dragon Punches(DPs) or similar moves: DPs offer players a high priority, solid dmg anti air atk that at advanced levels is used as a FDAC launcher into ultras/supers. The major disadvantage to these types of moves is that of they are blocked/they miss, you will be open to punishes by your opponent. Proper use of these types of moves is crucial for any player that wants to be tournament level.
- Don’t rely on unsafe moves: A habit that took a while for me to break as Adon. When I first started out, I would get into situations where my opponent would be in chip dmg range and would back as far as they could to make me come to them. So I would use EX Jaguar Tooths to do the job and against lower level players, it worked. Once I started playing higher level players, using a Jaguar Tooth meant eating a DP/getting neutral jumped into a combo/ultraed/supered. These kinds of atks are options to be used rarely as any high level player will know how to punish them.
- Spacing aka “footsies”: Know your character’s optimal ranges for answering your opponent’s actions and to do maximal damgage. If you’re Dhalsim, the further away they are, the better. Zangief and other grapplers are the exact opposite. This is the beginners guide to footsies
